Killowen Double Copper Pot Distilled Small Batch Irish Poitín is a highly complex, premium expression of Ireland’s traditional, unaged white spirit. Recreating an authentic historic recipe, it treats poitín not merely as unaged whiskey, but as a unique, terroir-driven spirit in its own right.
Product Highlights
-
Description: Distilled in County Down, Northern Ireland, this small-batch poitín features a unique, historical mash bill of 69.2% malted barley, 23% unmalted green barley, 3.8% Maris Otter heritage malt, 2% oats, and 2% wheat. The malted barley is heavily smoked over local turf in Killowen’s handmade kiln. It is double-distilled in direct flame-fired copper pot stills fitted with traditional worm-tub condensers, yielding an incredibly rich, oily, and heavy-bodied texture.
-
Tasting Notes:
-
Nose: Intensely earthy and aromatic, opening with aromas of freshly turned soil, damp grass, and rich turf smoke, balanced by zesty green apple and cream soda.
-
Palate: A thick, creamy mouthfeel. It leads with sweet, comforting flavors of warm breakfast porridge with heavy cream and earthy vanilla, transitioning rapidly into punchy notes of aniseed, clove, cinnamon, and a bite of black peppercorn.
-
Finish: Long, deep, and satisfyingly warm, leaving a lingering trail of woodsy smoke, fresh ginger spice, and dark espresso.
-
-
Pairing Suggestions: Pairs beautifully with hearty, earthy foods like a bowl of slow-cooked oatmeal topped with brown sugar, smoked salmon on rye bread, or rich charcuterie. It also complements spiced apple pastries or a piece of high-percentage dark chili chocolate.
