Clermont Steep American Single Malt Whiskey is a milestone release from the James B. Beam Distilling Co., representing the historic distillery's first foray into the rapidly growing American Single Malt category. Developed by 8th-generation Master Distiller Freddie Noe, it is crafted from 100% American malted barley and aged for five years to deliver a bready, grain-forward profile designed to appeal to both bourbon fans and malt enthusiasts.
Product Description
Bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV), Clermont Steep is distilled using a specific mash bill of 100% malted barley, featuring a unique blend of standard distiller’s malt and 20% golden Vienna malt. The spirit is fermented with Jim Beam's signature house yeast strain and matured for five years in bespoke, newly charred American oak casks that receive a heavy toast and a quick #1 light char. This intentional barrel treatment allows the sweet, toasted-grain character of the American barley to shine through without being entirely dominated by the heavy, woody tannins typical of standard bourbon barrels.
Tasting Notes
-
Aroma: Inviting and sweet with prominent notes of toasted malt, warm caramel, and English toffee. A wholesome, bready aroma reminiscent of baking cereal or warm toast balances out undertones of vanilla and light maple.
-
Palate: Oily, smooth, and velvety on the tongue. Initial flavors of creamy caramel and brown sugar-cinnamon give way to a distinct bready, whole-grain cereal density. Subtle earthy elements of toasted oats, fresh nuts, and a light dash of white peppercorn spice add depth mid-palate.
-
Finish: Remarkably long and lingering. The grain-forward sweetness cleanly transitions into a drying, warming finish defined by lightly charred oak, herbal malt, and fading baking spices.
Pairing Suggestions
-
Savory & Earthy Starters: Pairs beautifully with roasted wild mushrooms, artisanal charcuterie, or a warm pretzel served with stone-ground mustard, which mirrors the whiskey's earthy, cereal-grain character.
-
Cheeses: Complement the sweet, toasty malt profile with a nutty, semi-hard cheese like an aged Gruyère or Manchego.
-
Roasted Meats: The bready sweetness and gentle pepper spice complement the rich, caramelized outer crust of a pan-seared pork chop, roasted duck breast, or herb-crusted chicken.
-
Service Tip: Excellent served neat or with a few drops of water, which helps open up the tighter oak tannins and coaxes out more of the subtle fruit and floral notes. It also functions as a stellar base for a Single Malt Sidecar or a whiskey-forward riff on a classic Manhattan.
